Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections commonly spread through sexual contact. Some can also be passed from mother to child or through shared needles or transfusions.

STDs can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Common infections include chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HPV, hepatitis B, syphilis, and HIV.

Testing and diagnosis may include blood and urine tests or samples from affected areas. Because many STDs can be asymptomatic, regular screening is important.

Screening is recommended for those at higher risk—including sexually active individuals, pregnant women, men who have sex with men, and anyone with new or multiple partners.

Early detection can prevent complications and reduce the risk of transmission. Screening during pregnancy is especially important for protecting maternal and infant health.
